Rutherford College
In 1853, a small private academy known as Owl Hollow
School was located in the eastern part of Burke County. The school received
funding from local resident John T. Rutherford which allowed it to expand.
Prior to the Civil War the school taught military tactics and philosophy
but it was forced to close its doors when the Civil War began. It later
reopened in 1871 as a four-year college. The town of Rutherford College
was founded 1871. Approximately 1,300 individuals reside in Rutherford
College.
