Morganton
Morganton, the county seat, is the largest city in
Burke County with a population of approximately 17,300. It encompasses
about 19.23 square miles. It was named after the Revolutionary War hero
General Daniel Morgan.
The community is located on Interstate 40 and is bisected by US 70 and
64 and North Carolina Highways 181, 18, and 126. Each September the city
stages the annual two-day Historic Morganton Festival that attracts
upwards of 40,000 people. Craft and food booths line the downtown
streets and well known musical entertainers offer free concerts.
The City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium (CoMMA) showcases a wide
variety of ever changing entertainment ranging from Broadway
performances to the best in “foot stomping” Celtic music and dance. This
modern 1,058 seat auditorium boasts many “sold out” performances. It is
also the location of Ben Long’s fresco, “Sacred Dance & the Muses” which
is painted on the ceiling in the atrium. The Old Rock School in Valdese
has a 473 seat auditorium. This is the location for musical programs,
blue grass music and theatrical presentations by the local Old Colony
Players drama group.
